The New Media: Introduction

What is the new media? Well, there are different schools of thought.

If you’re a reporter at the Washington Post or an anchor on ABC you might say that the new media is the extension of the traditional media, be it print, audio, or video into new spaces. Particularly the internet, but also CD’s, DVD’s, and even your cell phone. If you’re a blogger or independent film maker you might agree on the terf, but see the new media more as the intersection of art, technology, and political analysis.

While for the most part there’s not a conflict between these views, on one point there’s the makings of a head-on collision: Who’s in charge? The professionals or the amateurs? The corporations or the “unwashed masses?”

There are other important questions as well. What is the ethical responsibility of the new media? What are the lines it should respect? When does media cross the line from informed opinion to propaganda?

To answer these questions, we begin by asking “What is the Old Media?”
